More than two dozen caregivers, senior companions, family members and clients gathered at Sheridan's Senior Center Monday for the annual Halloween luncheon in their honor.
The event is hosted by the senior center's Family Caregivers Support Group and Senior Companion program, to show appreciation for those who care for older adults. Caregiver Arlene Herboldt said its a time to celebrate.
Senior Center Director of Volunteers Nancy McKenzie is head of the senior companion program. She says the senior companions, who volunteer so others can stay in their homes, are awesome.
Stella Mantano is director of the center's Family Caregiver Services. She said the party gives them all a break.
The family caregiver director says the party is held at this time of year because November is National Family Caregiver Month. Senior Center workers said this year's attendance was down compared to years past, but speculated it might be because of Monday's stormy weather.
Mantano said the Senior Center has hosted the party for years.
“It just seems to come together,” she said. The center sends invitations to all the caregivers and senior companions in the community.
“And if you don't get an invitation,” added one of Monday's guests, “you're still welcome to come.”
