Sunday, September 11th the 2011 Out of the Darkness Walk will take place as a fundraiser for suicide prevention efforts in Sheridan County.

Vanessa Hastings is with the Suicide Prevention Coalition and outlines how the money is distributed.

Last year, the local group had a goal of raising $10,000, and a total of $20,000 was raised.

Dawn Sopron is a therapist with Clay Pot Counseling in Sheridan, and she discusses some of the results from research into the brains of suicidal subjects.

A logical assumption might be that questioning a person about their suicidal tendencies might “put them over the edge,” but Sopron says.

Sopron adds that you're not taking the place of a professional therapist by keeping open the lines of communication with a vulnerable person. However, if someone is in high crisis and has a weapon, 9-1-1 should be called immediately.
