From the junk heap to the auction block, Saturday five teams competed in the 4th Annual Welding Rodeo held in conjunction with the Big West Arts Festival held this past weekend.

Team members turned scavengers as they crawled through scrap metal piles picking out pieces of junk, recycling and welding them into sculptures following the theme, “The West is Best.”  Cinda Boe has entered the competition with her son Adam for the past four years and says beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

A timed event, contestants had eight hours to complete their sculpture. Welding instructor at Sheridan College, Carl Schiner said there were three components to the judging.

The team called Sprocket Heads took home the $1,000 first place prize.  Team members included Mike Walker, Ryan Bircher, and brothers Brian and Loren Blakeman. Once judging took place, the sculptures were then auctioned off, with proceeds going back into the college welding program.
