A lightning caused fire some 300-miles away from Sheridan County filled the sky with smoke over the Big Horn Mountains Monday night. The Norton Point fire is burning in the in the Washakie Wilderness area about 24-miles north of Dubois. Norton Point Fire Public Information Officer Carl Yungck says that they plan on letting the fire run its course since it is in a bug killed remote area of the wilderness.
Weather conditions and the activity of the fire Monday is what caused the smoke to travel as far as it did.
Yungck said that a Type 2 Incident Management team has been brought in to monitor the fire. He also indicated that since it may not be out until it snows in the area, we can probably expect to see smoke in the Sheridan region periodically over the next few months.
