Less than a month ago Rob Spaulding became an ordained Catholic priest. Now he’s serving Sheridan at Holy Name Church. Sheridan Media News Director Kurt Layher talked with Father Spaulding about the path he took to get here.
Holy Name Catholic Church has a new associate pastor. He’s been in Sheridan for a few weeks and he grew up in Gillette. Father Rob Spaulding’s path was certainly not a straight one from Gillette to here. Like many young men in Wyoming, Spaulding wasn’t sure where he was headed after graduating from Campbell County High School in 1996. He made it as far as Laramie before he started to think about the church as a career.
It was while Spaulding was at seminary that tragedy struck. He was involved in an automobile accident and two fellow students died in the crash. Spaulding was driving that night, and had to come to terms with his feelings to continue on his chosen path.
Spaulding redoubled his efforts with the support of friends, family, and others. He finished his work to reach his ordination ceremony in Laramie earlier this month. He says it’s a bit strange coming to Sheridan as he’s reminded of the rivalry between Sheridan and Gillette in high school sports. He’s embracing his past, both good and bad, to become the best at what he does. Giving back in the way that he feels others gave to him.
Spaulding’s excitement about the future and the work he wants to do is almost contagious. He hopes it will become part of all his work in the parish.
