New Child Advocacy Director Proves the Importance of “Showing Up”

The new Child Advocacy Services of the Big Horns Executive Director made her debut this week, accepting a $50,000 grant from the Department of Family Services. In doing so, the new director, Bobbie Walseth, proved the importance of simply “showing up.” Though the grant was provided by the DFS, the Sheridan County Commissioners are charged with allocating the annual grant, which they did at a public hearing this week.

There was a total of three applicants for the grant; RENEW was requesting almost 37-thousand for a new program to develop six young disabled workers, and CDSI was requesting nearly 37-thousand for its parenting and counseling program. Because CASA was requesting 50-thousand dollars, the three groups were competing for around 124-thousand dollars from the 50-thousand dollar grant pool. However, because the CASA representatives were the only grant applicants to show up at the appropriation meeting, CASA received 100% of the grant money for this year. CASBH Executive Director,Bobbie Walseth:

Several of the Sheridan County Commissioners, including Tom Ringley, says although CASA provided a great application, their vote may have been different, had a rep from the other groups shown up:

Walseth says the grant funds will be used to support their visitation program so that children have “safe visitation free from crisis or stress.”

Bobbie Walseth has been serving as the Executive Director of the Buffalo Senior Center for the past five years. Bobbie says “she is very excited,” because “her passion has always been working on behalf of children.” She has also worked as a Living Skills Coach for autistic children and has been a foster parent.

Child Advocacy Services of the Big Horns runs two programs: Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Family Visitation Program.

Stay tuned because tomorrow we will hear from RENEW and CDSI to get the "other side of the story."
