A 115-pound 3-year-old male mountain lion was shot and killed by Sheridan Police Sunday night near Sheltered Acres Park, after Game and Fish personnel determined the animal to be a threat to public safety.

Game and Fish Information Specialist Warren Mischke said a resident in the area reported the lion passed through their back yard late Sunday afternoon.

Mischke says attempts to “immobilize and relocate the lion would have resulted in increased danger to the public.”

Sheridan Game Warden Bruce Scigliano authorized police to euthanize the animal. Sheridan Police Lt. Chris Dahmke said the mountain lion was determined to be in a safe area, and there was only one shot fired. The lion was killed in the area of the 1700 Block of Edwards Drive at about 6 pm.

Mischke added that it has been several months since a mountain lion has been killed in town, but it does happen when the animals come into residential areas for different reasons. Mischke explains.

The Game and Fish urges the public to report any mountain lion activity in a developed area to their office or to the authorities.
