Seven counterfeit $100 bills have been passed in Sheridan this week, and Sheridan Police say they have determined at least one of the fakes came from the Gillette area.
An email from Sheridan Police Lt. Chris Dahmke Thursday night stated that the bills have been passed at a string of businesses all located on or near Coffeen Avenue, including Wal-Mart and Starbucks.
SPD reminds business owners to check all currency they receive. In the case of these counterfeits, the bills are washed $5 bills so a faint picture of Lincoln's head will show up in the white space to the right of the center photo when the bill is held up to the light. Legitimate bills will have Benjamin Franklin's head in the space.
A legitimate bill also reads “USA 100” in the vertical security strip immediately to the left of Franklin.
Upon receiving a counterfeit, call 911, try to get a description of the person who passes it, their car and possibly a license plate number.
We will have more for you on this story as it comes in.
