Miss Sheridan Fights Homophobia

Miss Sheridan Fights Homophobia

Chelsie Nowak, reigning Miss Sheridan, is gearing up for the Miss Wyoming pageant, which will be held here at the WYO Theater June 23.

Aside from competing in the pageant itself, Nowak, 22, is working to raise funds for charities and participating in activism for social change.

Her main platform is to raise tolerance in Wyoming for people with nontraditional sexual orientations.

Nowak said she chose this platform because it's something she strongly believes in, and has seen the negative consequences of homophobia first hand.

Nowak also said she also saw evidence of intolerance toward homosexuals when she attended Sheridan High School, where gay or lesbian students were ostracized. She said one student moved out of the state due to the harassment. For more information about Chelsie, her causes and her bid for Miss Wyoming, click here.
