Mikesell/Potts Recreation Area Has 'Great Year'

Rick Durfee, caretaker at the Mikesell/Potts Recreation Area at Lake DeSmet, gave a season-end report to the county commissioners at their Tuesday meeting, saying it was a “great year” for the county-owned facility.

Durfee said this year's receipts from the campground totaled roughly $17,000, which is up significantly over the $8,600 collected in 2010. The camping fees, he said, are collected between April 1st and November 1st each year.

Plans for the winter season are to continue maintenance on the buildings and camping areas, and a new shelter will be installed at the south end of the recreation area sometime this winter or the early spring of 2012.

Durfee will be looking into the cost effectiveness of installing electricity to the eight main campgrounds nearest the buildings at the rec area. As improvements are put in at the recreation area, Durfee believes use and revenue will continue to increase.

Durfee also made a request of the commissioners about the funds the rec area brought in this summer season.

Jarvis will also be available for other jobs around the county's other facilities as well, Durfee said, including snow removal, and maintenance and repairs. He will fill the position of another part-time county employee that will be leaving.

The commissioners agreed to allow $11,000 to be used for improvements at Mikesell/Potts, and to use the remaining $6,000 to help pay for Jarvis' salary.
