Methane Production Takes a Dive in Campbell County

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - Coal-bed methane gas production in Campbell County plummeted almost 25% in 2009.

The depressed price for natural gas has caused some major drilling companies to reduce the amount of gas they produced by not fixing broken wells, not drilling new wells and shutting in some producing wells until prices improve.

Natural gas prices have rebounded some in recent weeks, but few have yet to speculate that 2010 production will be much better than in 2009. Coal-bed methane drilling is also expected to remain depressed.

The significant drop in production affects Campbell County's government because it receives taxes based on the amount of production in the county.
