Monday, at Sheridan College's Veterans Plaza, a Memorial Day ceremony was held and Sheridan Media's Judy Hagerott was there and brings us this story.

Walking over to the Sheridan College's Veterans Plaza, one eye watching where I was going and the other scanning the gray clouds above, a friend remarked...”My mother always told me that if the clouds looked green, hail was sure to come.” On second glance, those clouds were looking a little green.

It was the college's inaugural Memorial Day ceremony re-commemorating the placement of 370 stone pavers honoring our veterans at the recently finished Veterans Plaza.

Dr. Paul Young moderated the ceremony which included the unveiling of the statue “Freedom Isn't Free.” Wind began to whip up and sure enough, here came the hail.

It wasn't your ordinary pea-sized hail, I mean those hail stones were bigger than a marble. Some ran for their cars, others raced for the small open-sided tents. I made it to one of those tents with about 30 other people all crowded together.

I got binged right in the cheekbone and let me tell you, my cheek still hurts. What's with this Wyoming weather anyway? Even with the hail, wind and thunder, the ceremony continued right where it left off with Young reading from an Oliver Wendell Holmes speech on Memorial Day in 1884.

The spirit of patriotism wasn't dampened by the weather as members of the armed services presented wreaths, the Sheridan College Brass Quintet played, the names of Wyoming's military who died while serving their country were read, a 21 gun salute was fired and taps were played.

Young said Memorial Day is a day to remember the college's beginnings.

That's the reason for many of our two-year colleges.

The Sheridan College Veterans Plaza can be found at the entrance to the college.
