The rain stopped briefly for the Tuesday morning groundbreaking ceremony held on the site of the soon-to-be-constructed new Meadowlark Elementary School.

Present for the event were members of the Sheridan County School District 2 Board of Trustees, District Superintendent Craig Dougherty, Principal Jason Hillman, Director of Elementary Curriculum Scott Stults, District Facilities Director Julie Carroll, architects and engineers with TSP, representatives from Delta Construction, and neighborhood parents.

District Trustee Nancy Drummond comments on the momentous day.

Principal Hillman says he's looking forward to what the new building will offer in providing the best teaching and learning environment for his staff and the students.

Hillman adds that while they've missed their neighborhood and the ability for the kids to walk to school, he is so grateful for the warm welcome of the residents in the neighborhood around their temporary location on Avon Street, and to be able to have all of the students in one building during this transition period.

Hillman says the new Meadowlark Elementary School should be complete in time for the 2012-2013 school year.
