U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis issued a statement Wednesday shortly after President Obama announced his nomination of Sally Jewell, the CEO of the outdoors products company REI, for Secretary of the Interior.
Representative Lummis said in a media release Jewell is an accomplished woman, and that her business sense is sorely needed to counteract some decisions made by the Obama administration.
Lummis said to be a successful leader in Wyoming and the rest of the the western states, Jewell should commit to a balanced approach to the use of public lands. Lummis added that what she calls responsible shared use of these lands should be a priority.
She closed her statement on the appointment: "While REI is a successful company that caters to a particular niche, let’s remember that the Department of the Interior must manage land and resources for a much broader constituency than just those who purchased a new wicking fleece for a day hike. I sincerely hope Sally Jewell is up to the task."
