Low Elk Numbers On The Refuge In Jackson Hole Wyoming

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - National Elk Refuge officials say a
combination of hunting pressure, mild weather and good forage
available elsewhere resulted in the lowest number of elk on the refuge this fall in 25 years. The refuge typically has about 3,000 elk on its southern end this time of year. But biologist Eric Cole says the high count earlier this week was only about 900 elk.

Elk numbers

It would be interesting to me how the current numbers will compare to the average numbers for the last decade or two. I don't really know if the numbers are available to the general public or not but it could surely provide information as to whether the wolves are in fact having an affect on the elk or not. If you go to the SaveElk.com web site, they claim the wolves are wreaking havoc on the elk numbers, if you can find a pro-wolf site, they say the wolves aren't hurting the numbers at all. Does anyone know of a way to track these numbers throughout the winter?
