A local VFW post is celebrating years of service on Memorial Day. Hannah Stepenoff has the details.
The Buffalo VFW Post 2469 is celebrating its 75th anniversary on a fitting day. On Memorial Day, which falls on May 26 this year, they will be holding an afternoon celebration where veterans and their friends and family can celebrate three-quarters of a century of providing community support.
Vietnam war veteran and captain for the post Bernie Bickels said that the doors of the post have been open since 1939, and though he joined around nine years ago, he has seen enough to know how much the local post has helped the community.
The chapter will receive a certificate from Wyoming VFW Junior Vice Commander Dennis Miller at the event.
No one does more for veterans than the national organization, he said, which offers healthcare assistance, provides scholarships, and develops endowments for foreign combat veterans of all ages. All of this is done through volunteerism, donations and fundraising, he said, and the local chapter is no different.
The event will be a great way for veterans to be celebrated, he said, but also it's a way for them to interact with others that have similar experiences. The event begins at noon and will run until around 4 p.m,and it will be followed by Monday night bingo for those who are interested.
The event will be at the post on 17 Veterans Lane in Buffalo. For more information, you can contact Bickels at 307-278-0384.
