Sheridan's Coffeen Elementary School is now Henry A. Coffeen Elementary School, as of Wednesday night.
The Sheridan County School District #2's board of trustees approved a recommendation initiated by the school's principal, Nicole Trahan, to clarify that the school is named after a community founder and is not a reference to the school's location in town.
Henry Asa Coffeen originally came to Big Horn from Illinois and eventually opened a general store in Sheridan near the railroad depot. He helped initiate a petition to establish Sheridan County and served as the town's third mayor and later as a congressional representative.
The decision to abbreviate the middle initial in the school's new name was established because historical records show that's how Coffeen usually signed his name.
