This week's Bank of Sheridan / Sheridanmedia.com Poll Question deals with the issue of switching the state retirement system from a defined benefit plan to a 401K type plan.
Rep. Mike Madden (R-Sheridan/Buffalo) says that the issue is not likely to come up during the budget session because it comes from an individual and not a committee.
In summary, the defined benefit system takes a certain amount out of a person's paycheck and they get that back no matter what, while the proposed system takes money out and the amount the person receives back depends on how well it does as an investment.
Bills that pass through committee receive much more study and discussion than ones brought by individual legislators. Madden said that the 10 Democrats won't vote for it and he could name another half dozen that wouldn't either. As for if the bill will receive further review and go through committee in the future Madden said he wasn't sure.
