The official announcement came last fall during a school assembly in Big Horn, and the celebrations have continued through the school year for Laurie Graves, the 2011 Wyoming Teacher of the Year.
Graves, a 3rd Grade teacher at Big Horn Elementary School, was honored at a dinner held at the Sheridan Holiday Inn Monday night.
With family, friends, colleagues and state and local dignitaries in attendance, Mrs. Graves was treated to music and countless words of praise for her years of passion and creativity in the classroom. Superintendent Sue Belish told the crowd.
While the words of praise from state dignitaries and District officials carries significance and meaning, perhaps no comment summed up Mrs. Graves' effect on her students than this by former pupil Darien Gostas, now a Junior at BHHS.
With emotion and a humble spirit, Laurie Graves made a moving speech, crediting many influences on her love or teaching, and including all educators in her award.
