Reclamation work at the Kleenburn Coal Mine Site in Sheridan County recently received national recognition with the 2011 Western Regional Abandoned Land Mine Reclamation award.
The United States Department of Interior's Office of Surface Mining recognized Kleenburn for its exemplary reclamation in removing dangerous health, safety and environmental problems.
Sheridan County Commissioner Tom Ringley says that the project was a collaboration between AML, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Sheridan County that resulted in the Sheridan County Kleenburn Recreation Area.
The 80-acre recreation facility along the Tongue River north of Sheridan offers public fishing, 1.5 miles of walking paths, picnic tables, parking facilities and a rest room facility.
The total cost of the Kleenburn project was $482,000.
