Sheridan mortician PJ Kane issued a media release late Friday afternoon announcing his intention to run for Sheridan County Coroner. Kane indicates that his primary objective is to investigate all unattended deaths in Sheridan County according to the standards set forth by the Wyoming Board of Coroners.

Kane states that those standards are to identify the deceased and determine the manner and cause of death. In doing so, Kane says, all his investigations shall include 1) scene investigation; 2) toxicology samples of the deceased; 3) inventory of property; 4) evidence and medications; 5) photographs; 6) external exams; and 7) DNA samples.

Kane also says he intends to incorporate Emergency Medical Technicians to serve as deputy coroners. He adds that EMT's have training to review medical records, they have working relationships with Sheridan County doctors and are required to maintain medical continuing education hours, which can also be used toward required coroner continued education. Kane states that this will ensure quality investigations and save taxpayers' dollars.

Kane served as Sheridan County Coroner for two terms, from 1994 through 2002. During that time, he says, the coroner’s office was professionally operated with fiscal responsibility. Kane closed his media release saying, “I took great pride in my investigations, the working relationships with law enforcement, and assisting people at times of great need.”

PJ Kane is the owner of Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan.
