The trial of Richard Wilkerson began Monday with the selection and seating of a jury, which took most of the day to complete, according to officials at the Johnson County Judicial Center.
The trial itself, with opening arguments, is scheduled to begin Tuesday morning in Johnson County District Court.
Wilkerson is charged with second degree murder, a felony, in connection with the death of 45 year-old Brian Newman in a bar altercation last September in Buffalo.
Second degree murder is defined as “purposely and maliciously but without premeditation killing another person.”
Wilkerson is facing a minimum 20 years to life in prison plus a $10,000 fine if convicted of the crime.
Judge William J. Edelman is presiding over the trial, which is expected to take at least this week to complete.
