CHEYENNE, (AP) - A trial date has been set for a former Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper charged for an aborted murder plot allegedly designed to collect settlement money from Wal-Mart.
A Friday filing in U.S. District Court in Cheyenne sets an August 24 jury trial for Franklin Joseph Ryle. According to an FBI agent's affidavit, Ryle planned to murder a Wal-Mart truck driver and crash the truck into his patrol car to collect damages from the company.
Ryle has pleaded not guilty to three civil rights charges alleging he violated the truck driver's rights during the aborted plot this January. U.S. District Judge Clarence Brimmer this week denied Ryle's request to dismiss two of the three charges against him.
