Johnson County's Wellness Group met for their quarterly meeting Wednesday and discussed topics ranging from evacuation planning to events and happenings with the individual member groups.
County Emergency Management Coordinator Marilyn Connolly gave a presentation on UTSE Bags (Unable To Self Evacuate), what they are and how they will be used in an emergency situation.
She discussed the need for and requested help from the group for ideas on how to find those in the community who may need this type of service. She explained the difficulties in gathering information and storing it in a data base and the liabilities involved with keeping those records and also the difficulties in not breaching privacy laws.
Ideas brought up were the possibility of forming “Neighborhood Watch”-type groups throughout Buffalo with volunteers willing to talk to their neighbors and keep up on the status of each household in case of an emergency situation.
The idea is to be prepared with medications, special requirements like wheelchairs or other needs in case an evacuation is needed, so no one that may be in need of extra help isn't forgotten or left behind.
She requested help brainstorming from the group and there will be more discussions on the matter in the near future.
