At their Tuesday meeting the Johnson County Commissioners heard a report from Emergency Management Coordinator Marilyn Connolly about the newest public alert system, the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (or IPAWS), which is being offered through Homeland Security /FEMA.
Connolly explained more about the system to the county commissioners.
Connolly said this new system integrates the existing public notification systems together to better inform the public. Those systems are the Emergency Alert System, which is broadcast on television; There is the Wireless Emergency Alerts, which utilize cell phones; the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Weather Radio Alerts; and any other alert system a municipality may have, such as Code Red.
The commissioners voted to allow the chairman to sign the agreement.
