A reported kidnapping originating in Montana and ending in Johnson County near Buffalo Monday turned out to be a false report, according to Johnson County Sheriff Steve Kozisek.
The sheriff said the original report came from a man in Colstrip, Montana who called the local police there to report his wife had been kidnapped and that he was in contact with her through her cell phone.
Through cell phone records, law enforcement was able to trace her location to Interstate 90 approaching Wyoming.
Sheriff Kozisek said at about 4:30 Monday morning, the woman contacted the Buffalo dispatch center and reported that she had been kidnapped, that she had been pregnant but had given birth to the baby in the trunk of the car, that the kidnappers had taken the baby from her and she was walking down the Interstate just east of Buffalo.

Because the report was of a kidnapping that had crossed state lines, a Federal offense, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was called in as well. The sheriff said their interviews and investigation concurred with local law enforcement that there was no kidnapping and no missing child in this case.
