“Remembering a Decade of Hope in Johnson County” is the name given to this year's 10th Anniversary celebration of Relay For Life in Johnson County.
The celebration will be later this year, July 15 and 16, at the Buffalo High School Athletic Field.
Coming up this weekend in conjunction with the Health Fair, is this year's kickoff for the Relay For Life events on Saturday, March 12 from 9am until noon at the Johnson County Fairgrounds.
Information on the Relay For Life will be available at their booth at the Health Fair, and those interested can also sign up individually or as a team for the relay events.
Sharon Farquhar, Publicity Chair for the local Relay For Life, said there are many ways for volunteers to contribute.
Also part of the Relay For Life kickoff, Dan Judes with Schwann's will be set up in the Ace Hardware parking Lot in Buffalo Saturday from 10am until 7pm. A percentage of his sales that day will be donated to the Relay For Life of Johnson County.
According to information provided by Relay For Life, it began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a surgeon and marathon runner, ran for 24 hours at a track in Washington State to raise $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. They adopted the Relay For Life as their signature event in 1992. Over $3 billion has been raised since then.
Farquhar said the event this weekend is just the beginning.
