Johnson County Holds Workshop On Lake DeSmet Lease

Johnson County's elected officials held a public workshop Wednesday to discuss the proposed Game and Fish lease of Lake DeSmet to gather their opinions and their input and decide how the county will proceed with the information.

Concerns discussed during the workshop were the length of the proposed lease, the shoreline management by Game and Fish, and the fact that a number of questions presented by Johnson County to the Lake DeSmet Counties Coalition have not been addressed.

At last Thursday's LDCC meeting in Sheridan, the coalition and members of the Sheridan County Commission asked the Johnson County Commissioners for specific reasons why they are against the Game and Fish lease.

The consensus of the Johnson County elected officials was to draft a number of “bullet-points” that would simply and succinctly present the county's concerns to the coalition and the Sheridan County Commission.

The concerns will be presented as soon as they are drafted.

The Game and Fish, according to County Commission Administrator Jennifer Jackson, will hear a presentation on the proposed Lake DeSmet lease at their upcoming meetings in Lander July 9-11. The lease discussion is Item #22 on the Agenda for Wednesday, July 11.
