At their meeting this week the Johnson County Commissioners approved a request to lift the county-wide fire ban enacted this summer.
The request came from Fire Warden Rick Farris explained that both he and Fire Chief Scott Haines in Kaycee feel there is sufficient moisture in the ground with the recent rain and snow to allow burning to resume.
The commissioners discussed the possibility of allowing Farris and Haines authority to lift bans in the future without consulting the commissioners first, but decided to continue the practice to allow public comment, if anyone was interested, when the commissioners address the issue during their meetings.
The commissioners then voted to lift the fire ban in the county, but wanted the public aware that they still need to, as a courtesy, contact either Johnson County Fire District One in Buffalo or the Powder River Fire District in Southern Johnson County before they burn.
