At their meeting Tuesday, the Johnson County Commissioners discussed the progress on a proposed shooting complex a local group wants to construct near the airport.
Mike Mestemaker, with the Johnson County Indoor Shooting Complex group, approached the county commission Tuesday for permission to build the complex on county-owned land near the airport.
The NRA (National Rifle Association)-sanctioned group has already garnered funds from the NRA to build the complex, and received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to put the complex on the site near the airport.
Mestemaker told the commissioners the NRA has already set money aside for the complex and is needing a lease signed with the county to proceed. The commissioners, concerned with possible liability to the county, discussed the possibility of the group purchasing the land to build the facility.
Mestemaker said the group would have liability insurance through the NRA which would not hold the county liable for any incident.
Commissioner Jim Hicks said, “I would like to see this happen, I just want to make sure we're not creating some problem (for the county) down the road.”
Both parties will continue to look into various possibilities on a lease, sale, or some other agreement along with a way to protect the county from any liability.
