The Johnson County Commissioners formally approved the new courtroom facility addition to the justice center at their meeting last week.

At the meeting, the commissioners heard a presentation from GSG Architecture on the design, cost estimates and recommendations for the proposed courtroom facility.

GSG, after their presentation, recommended the commission consider two options for construction of the courtroom facility. Tim Schenk of GSG explains.

Groathouse Construction's Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) means they would build it for a certain price, any costs above and beyond that would be borne by the contractor, and any savings would revert back to the county. Schenk explains option two.

Commissioner Delbert Eitel asked if this would just be a change order to the existing contract or if it would require a new contract, and GSG explained how it would work.

GSG estimated the cost of the courtroom facility at $10.4 million, down slightly from their earlier estimate of $10.6 million.

The commissioners voted to move forward with the construction of the courtroom facility and to allow Groathouse Construction the opportunity to present them with a GMP before making any further decisions.
