Jo Co Signs Water Rights Agreement for Steerhead Ranch

The Steerhead Ranch made a request of a number of water rights holders upstream from them, including Johnson County, to allow them to move their water rights to divert water for irrigation.

Commissioner Johns Gibbs explained what the request was about at last week's County Commission meeting.

Gibbs went on to explain the reason everyone must sign off on the water rights move is so everyone understands that when someone comes off of that ditch for irrigation, they no longer are required to help pay for repairs and maintenance of the ditch.

Gibbs told the commissioners he didn't expect the move would affect the county, as he didn't believe the county was paying for any upkeep on the ditch, based on the very minor water right the county owns there.

Commissioner Delbert Eitel asked if the county would be giving up any water rights with the agreement, and Gibbs assured him they would not. The commissioners voted to allow Chair Smokey Wildeman to sign the agreement.
