At their regular meeting Monday night, the Johnson County School Board heard a presentation from Melissa Butcher of PB Communications regarding her ideas and plans for keeping the public informed during the upcoming construction of the new elementary school in Buffalo.
Superintendent Dr. Rod Kessler has been in discussions with Butcher to gauge her firm's interest and determine if the idea was sound.
Kessler told the board that there “wasn't a lot of wiggle room at the state level,” but there would be ample opportunity for discussions and distribution of information at the local level.
Kessler said the public relations nightmare during the construction of the new high school and tearing down of the old one a few years ago prompted the decision to look into hiring an outside firm to help in communicating with the public and community.
After hearing Butcher's proposal, the board thought the idea warranted at least more discussions and approved Kessler continuing negotiations with Butcher.
The cost of hiring PB Communications, should it be eventually approved, will be rolled into the overall cost bids of building the new school, according to Kessler.
