Jo Co, Buffalo Discussing Modeling for Lake DeSmet

Johnson County Commissioners
Johnson County Commissioners

At the Johnson County Commissioner's meeting Tuesday, Commission Chair Smokey Wildeman brought to the other commissioners the possibility of the county and City of Buffalo having their own modeling study of Lake DeSmet done, to be ready in case industry should show interest in the lake in the future.

He explains further.

Modeling became an issue when NERD Gas officials approached Johnson County and the City of Buffalo earlier this year to look into the possibility of building a natural gas to gasoline plant at the lake.

After realizing the complications involved in the Lake DeSmet agreement, NERD Gas shifted their focus to property in Sweetwater County for the plant.

Also in the mix is a proposed lease agreement between the Lake DeSmet Counties Coalition and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for water to protect the fishery in the lake, as well as the traditional agricultural irrigation responsibilities in the watershed.

Commissioner Delbert Eitel questioned whether it was necessary for the county to pay for modeling for the lake.

The commissioners took no action on the matter, and will wait for results from a meeting between the interested parties, the LDCC, the Game and Fish, NERD Gas, and the Wyoming Water Development Commission that took place Tuesday in Cheyenne.
