JCSD1 Gets Good Report From Accreditation Team

The Johnson County School District One Board of Trustees heard a positive preliminary accreditation report from the External Review Team with AdvancED, who were in town this week to perform their observations.

The accreditation is essentially a peer review, according to team leader Jerry Cooper, as the team members are all educators themselves from all over the country.

Cooper explained a grading system from a low of “1” to a high of “4” they used to assess the district in five standards areas.

The district scored a 3.25 in Purpose and Direction; 3.83 in Governance and Leadership; 3.60 in Using Results For Continuous Improvement; 3.33 in Teaching and Assessing For Learning; and 3.12 in Resources and Support Systems.

Cooper said scoring a four is nearly impossible, and that a three represented an excellent mark as the bar is set very high to reach that goal.

“It is difficult to attain,” he told the board. “So the fact that you...have scores like this, is something that as a Board of Education and as a district you need to celebrate.”

There were some areas that need some improvement, and Cooper said that is the purpose of the accreditation process is to continue improving as a district, but overall they were impressed with the Johnson County School District.

The full written report from AdvancED will be presented to the board within 30 days, and accreditation results are expected in January.
