January is Cervical Health Awareness Month

Every year in the United States, approximately 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 4,000 die as a result of the disease. January is National Cervical Health Awareness Month and the message is prevent, protect and screen says Wendy Wood, Nurse Practitioner with Strahan and Associates in Sheridan.

Wood said that women can contact their primary care provider or obstetrician about screenings, and that if payment is an issue, Reproductive Healthcare of the Big Horns offers a sliding scale fee to help pay for the screenings. Friday, January 18th, there'll be a “Teal and White Night” in Sheridan to help raise awareness about cervical cancer and raise money to assist with screening and prevention programs in Sheridan County. We'll have more on that event for you next week.
