Over the past several years rabies cases in Sheridan County have been on the rise, which is just another reason why getting your pets and animals vaccinated against the disease is so important. Veterinarian Dr. Mark Schreiber says the rabies vaccine works very
well.

Schreiber said that skunks are one of the prime carriers of the disease and that if you see a skunk during the day, it's a pretty good indication that the animal has rabies. He said that bats are another primary carrier of the disease that people should be aware of raccoons as well. Although not a big carrier of the disease, he indicated that raccoons can be more susceptible to rabies due to their environment.
