This past Friday and Saturday, it was a Wagon Box Weekend at the Fort Phil Kearny State Historic site near Banner. Two days were packed full of living history demonstrations, lectures, and games.
Costumed guides also were on hand detailing the events of the Wagon Box Fight that happened 146 years ago.
One highlight of the weekend was a demonstration by bugler Craig Fischer of Longmont, Colorado.
Fischer said buglers held a special place at the fort, almost acting as a time clock.
Out on the field, especially during battle, bugle calls were the only way to hear the orders given by the commander.
Buglers just didn't toot their horn; they were skilled musicians.
Fischer himself is a pretty decent musician having been taught by the best.
Living history demonstrations also included firing of the Fort's howitzer every hour and demonstrations by the Fort Phil Kearny Regulars. Visitors also had opportunities to participate in marching drills, archery, and musket loading.
