The Internal Revenue Service is required by Congress to undergo an evaluation each year. National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson released her evaluation report this week. One of the conclusions… prepare for frustrations when trying to receive tax help by telephone. The IRS has set a target of answering only 71 percent of calls from taxpayers this year. That number is down from 83 percent just three years ago. That means they will not answer 3 out of every ten calls. Wait times for those that do get through could average 12 minutes or more.
There is some local help, however. Sheridan College will be offering a free income tax preparation service again this year. The program is no longer sponsored by the Students In Free Enterprise group but by Sheridan College itself. The service is offered at limited times and will run on certain Saturdays from 8AM until noon and Thursday afternoons from 2 until 6 in the Whitney building at the college. There will not be a chance to make appointments and services are first come, first served.
