Flying boots and barrel races launched the celebration of rodeo week in Sheridan in Kendrick Park on Tuesday night.
Phil Summers sent a boot soaring more than 100 feet to win the men's division of the annual Boot Kick-off, and Katie Lloyd won the women's division with a kick of nearly 77 feet.
Sheridan Media reporter Pat Blair interviewed the women's division winner after she received her prize of Chamber Bucks.
Lloyd said she's a former Sheridan resident, now living in Fruita, Colorado, but she comes back to Sheridan every year. She said she felt “awesome” about her win.
Sierra Powers won the boot kick-off for youth ages 9 to 12, sending the boot sailing nearly 60 feet. In the 13 to 17 age bracket, Alec Adell won with a kick of 93 feet.
Younger children participated in stick-horse barrel races. Kolby Smith won in the 4-and-under age group, Kyndal McFadden took first place in the races for 5 and 6-year-olds, and Abagail Olson finished first among the 7 and 8-year-olds.
After the boot kickoff, the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and the Buffalo Wild Bunch took each other on in a barrel-race competition that required the wearing of swim fins. The Wild Bunch won.
