After partnering for more than 30 years, the Salvation Army and Walmart will once again be hosting a toy drive to help provide new toys and coats to local children in need. The "Fill the Truck" toy drive will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at Sheridan's Walmart store.
As shoppers enter the store, Salvation Army volunteers will hand them a list of suggested gifts to go towards filling a 15-person van for the children. Once it's full of Christmas gifts, the Salvation Army will deliver them to children in need.
Last year, a national partnership between the Salvation Army and Sam's Club helped raise more than $46 million. All donations made to the red kettles outside of various Sheridan stores will remain in the community, according to a Salvation Army media release.
Red kettle donations help to provide food, clothing, shelter and financial assistance to an estimated 36,000 people each year. Members of the community interested in volunteering at Saturday's event can contact Captain Dave Leonard of the Salvation Army at 674-2444.
