Governor Matt Mead released a statement Friday saying he thinks the de-listing of the Wyoming gray wolf from the Endangered Species List has been a long time coming.
Over the last decade, the wolf population in the state has more than doubled the target population. Mead suggested the wolves were protected for so long due to political reasons.
Eighty-six percent of wolves in the state live inside national parks and reservations, and will be closely regulated when the hunting season opens Oct. 1. Wolves in other areas of the state are considered predator animals, and may be killed without a license.
