On Thursday, 31 Republican senators sent a letter to President Obama not to cave in to union pressure to expand access to the federal subsidies for health care premiums that were included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
In a letter spearheaded by Finance Committee Ranking Member Orrin Hatch and U.S. Senator John Barrasso, the lawmakers said that the act clearly states that individuals with access to employer sponsored insurance - including multi-employer plans - are ineligible for premium assistance. They say the law should not be altered to solely benefit unionized workers.
The $2.6 trillion health law was in part designed to help low-income families without employer coverage secure affordable insurance.
