A selection committee from Sheridan and Johnson counties will meet at 5:30 Tuesday afternoon in Story to interview candidates seeking appointment to the Wyoming Senate.
The District 22 post, which includes all of Johnson and a large area of Sheridan County, was left vacant by the death on June 19 of Sen. John Schiffer. The meeting will be at the Story Women's Club building at 28 North Piney Road.
Sheridan County Republican party Chairman Jesus Rios said District 22 includes all of Johnson County and most of Sheridan County outside Sheridan city limits. He said the selection committee is composed of the 49 precinct committee chair people from the two counties, 26 from Johnson and 23 from Sheridan.
He added there are about 18,000 residents in District 22. He talked about what those numbers mean.
The party chairman said each candidate for the senate seat will have five minutes to make a statement to the committee, then committee members will question each candidate. The committee will select three candidates to recommend to the Wyoming Republican State Central Committee, and the state committee will forward the list to Sheridan and Johnson county commissioners. The two county commissions will then appoint one of the three candidates to fill the vacancy.
The Sheridan County party chairman said the names could go to the county commissioners as early as Wednesday.
