#Giving Tuesday Emphasizes Needs of Non-Profits

While almost everyone is familiar with designated pre-holiday shopping days like “Black Friday,” or maybe even “Small Business Saturday.” From there, we move on to “Cyber Monday,” which, in turn, becomes “Hashtag Giving Tuesday” (#Giving Tuesday). If that last one doesn't ring a bell, don't feel bad. It's a relatively new phenomenon of a pre-holiday date designated for making donations of money, services or time to charities. The technical name of the event stems from the fact the majority of solicitations for volunteers or donations comes from social media sites, like Twitter or Facebook. Aaron Sherinian of the UN Foundation, a founding organization of the new event, says they hope to make giving back to the community an annual tradition.

More than a thousand groups are promoting the concept of Hashtag Giving Tuesdays, so don't be surprised if you bump into a charitable solicitation when you're surfing the web Tuesday. For more information, visit www.givingtuesday.org.
