This fall's black bear hunting season for hunt areas 1 and 2 in the Bighorn Mountains is now closed. State game officials say the season closed over the weekend when the female bear quota was met.
State game officials say bear season closes for each hunt area or group of hunt areas in the black bear management unit when the female mortality quota has been reached. The female quotas are used to ensure that female bears are not over harvested.
The closed areas are located in the northern Bighorn Mountains. Hunters are advised to check black bear regulations for other specific boundaries before heading out because it's their responsibility to confirm if an area is still open for hunting. The status of hunt area closures is available twenty-four hours a day by calling the toll free number – 800-264-1280.
