Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students, better known as PAWS, is the assessment system developed by the Wyoming Department of Education in conjunction with NCS Pearson. PAWS assesses students from around the state in reading, writing, math, and science.

PAWS has been under scrutiny almost from its inception several years ago because of various problems that seem to crop up every year the test is administered. Governor Dave Freudenthal recently appeared on KROE'S Public Pulse program and offered up these comments on PAWS.

Many superintendents from around the state, including Craig Dougherty with District Two have stated that the MAP test would be more efficient and less costly, and the Governor agrees.

Officials with Sheridan County School District Two stated at their recent board meeting that the problems with PAWS this year were not as bad as what other District's in the state experienced, and that a lot of that can be attributed to excellent work put in by the technical staff at District Two.
