CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Former Wyoming U.S. Sen. Malcolm Wallop has died at age 78. The Republican who served in the Senate from 1977 to 1995 fought for "Star Wars" space defense and for a tough anti-communist policy in Central America. Kerrie Kimmel of Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan says Wallop died Wednesday afternoon at his home near Big Horn.
As a senator, Wallop gained a significant victory in 1983 when President Ronald Reagan began pushing the Star Wars concept in anti-missile satellites. Wallop was among conservatives who had supported the plan for years. When he announced that he wouldn't seek a fourth Senate term, he cited Wyoming voters' support of term limits.
