BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer says he won't call up the Montana National Guard to fill sandbags and do other chores that local communities should be able to do on their own.

And he says he doesn't want to keep 98 soldiers on duty guarding closed or dangerous roads for much longer.

Meanwhile, water levels dropped several more feet in Roundup by late Tuesday, after the Musselshell River last week swamped a portion of the town in up to six feet of water.

Damage assessment teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are to fan out across the state beginning Thursday.

The forecast for the week indicated it would not get as warm in western Montana as previously feared, possibly delaying snow melt until early next week.
