Expert Touts Keystone Safety

A former pipeline safety regulator for the federal government under the Bush administration says he has no qualms about the safety or environmental impact of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Brigham McCowan says the line will end dependency on foreign oil.

Several environmental groups have expressed concerns about installing the pipeline for environmental reasons, citing past oil spill mishaps that produced catastrophic damage. Still, McCowan insists in general, pipelines are more than 99.9 percent safe.

The pipeline was recently re-routed to avoid the sandhills, but is still slated to run through the Ogallala Aquifer.

McCowan says there are 2.6 million miles of pipeline in the United States that transport 11.5 billion barrels of oil each year.
